Years are taken off on the calendar. The day and month stay the same unless the start is 29 February and the target year is not a leap year.

How do I find the birth year for an age?

Subtract the age in years from today. The result is the birthday for someone turning that age today; anyone born after it is still a year younger.

What about going back four years from 29 February?

You usually land on 29 February again, since most years four apart are both leap years. Century years are the exception. 1900 was not a leap year, so 29 February 1904 minus four years is 28 February 1900.

Why is the span not 365 days a year?

Because leap years add a day. Ten years back crosses two or three 29 Februaries, so the span is 3,652 or 3,653 days. The page shows the exact count.
